PRESS RELEASE -  Centre for Alternative Technology Takes Action for Sustainable Living

A project by the Centre for Alternative Technology to help communities in and around the Machynlleth embrace climate-friendly living has been given a welcome boost thanks to funding from the Welsh Government’s new Supporting Sustainable Living programme.

This Phase 1 SSL project will research the barriers that people living locally to CAT experience to reducing the carbon emissions associated with home energy use especially heating and how CAT can best help them to overcome those barriers. Cara Whelan, Centre of Alternative Technology, said "We are delighted to have received this funding from the Welsh Government's new Supporting Sustainable Living programme. 29% of energy, usually from fossil fuels is used in the home and home heating counts towards a big slice of green house gas emissions. We have chosen to focus on this
area of lifestyle which has a big impact on carbon footprint and where individuals can have a great deal of influence"

The grant is to be used to cover the training of volunteers and research to look at the barriers that affect the public in becoming more energy aware and energy efficient.

The grant scheme is administered by Environment Wales with funding support from the Welsh Government’s Climate Change and Water division.  The ambitious new scheme aims to bring about long-term changes in behaviour and lifestyle that will help reduce Wales’ greenhouse gas emissions and make communities more resilient to the impacts of climate change. The scheme will make available almost £500,000 in funding to projects from all sectors over the next 2 years.
